Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 mini slider rolls (soft and fluffy; Hawaiian rolls recommended)
  • 12 ounces deli sliced ham (smoked ham preferred)
  • 8 ounces Swiss cheese slices
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Caramelize the onions: Heat 1/2 cup (113 grams) of unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced large yellow onion with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir occasionally and cook for 20-25 minutes until deep golden brown and soft.
  3. Add flavor to the sauce: Stir in 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder. Mix well and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. Prepare the slider rolls: Without separating, slice the mini slider rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom halves in a 9×13-inch baking dish, fitting snugly.
  5. Layer ham and cheese: Evenly distribute approximately 12 ounces of deli sliced ham over the bottom halves. Then layer 8 ounces of Swiss cheese slices on top of the ham.
  6. Top with roll tops: Place the top halves of the rolls over the cheese, pressing gently to make a compact sandwich.
  7. Pour onion-butter sauce: Spoon the warm caramelized onion sauce evenly over the tops of the sliders, covering all the buns.
  8. Add poppy seeds: Sprinkle 1 tablespoon poppy seeds evenly on top.
  9. Cover and bake: Tent the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes until the tops are golden and the cheese is bubbly.
  10. Serve warm: Let the sliders cool for a few minutes before serving so the cheese sets slightly but remains gooey.

Notes

Use a heavy-bottomed pan for caramelizing onions to prevent burning. Patience is key when caramelizing onions to achieve deep golden color and sweetness. Butter is essential for rich flavor; avoid oil. Slice rolls carefully with a serrated knife to prevent tearing. For crispier edges, skip foil for last few minutes of baking. Onions can be prepped ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days. Reheat leftovers in oven to maintain texture.
