A quick and easy recipe for crispy shrimp coated in a spicy-sweet bang bang sauce, made healthier and crunchier using an air fryer. Perfect for snacks, appetizers, or casual dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • ½ cup (60g) all-purpose flour (can substitute with almond flour for gluten-free)
  • ½ cup (50g) panko breadcrumbs (plain or Japanese style)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • ½ cup (120ml) mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) sweet chili sauce
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) sriracha
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) lime juice
  • Optional: pinch of sugar
  • Chopped green onions or cilantro for garnish
  • Lime wedges for serving

Instructions

  1. Rinse shrimp under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. In a shallow bowl, combine flour, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Beat the egg in a second bowl.
  4. Place panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  5. Dip each shrimp first into the flour mixture, shaking off excess, then into the beaten egg, and finally coat with panko breadcrumbs.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  7. Arrange shrimp in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overlapping; cook in batches if needed.
  8. Air fry shrimp for 7-9 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  9. While shrimp cooks, whisk together mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, and lime juice; adjust seasoning as desired.
  10. Transfer cooked shrimp to a bowl and gently toss with the bang bang sauce until evenly coated.
  11. Garnish with chopped green onions or cilantro and serve immediately with lime wedges.

Notes

Dry shrimp thoroughly before coating for best crispiness. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to maintain crunch. Sauce can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. For extra crunch, air fry shrimp 1-2 minutes longer before tossing in sauce. Use almond flour and gluten-free panko for a gluten-free version. Adjust sriracha for spice level or substitute mayo with Greek yogurt for a lighter sauce.
