A rich, creamy peppermint hot chocolate perfect for cozy winter nights, combining high-quality cocoa with peppermint extract and topped with whipped cream and crushed candy canes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk (can substitute almond or oat milk for dairy-free)
  • ½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream (can substitute full-fat coconut cream for dairy-free)
  • ¼ cup (25 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • ¼ cup (45 g) dark chocolate chips (optional but recommended)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Crushed candy canes (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder and ¼ cup granulated sugar until smooth and lumps are broken up.
  2. Slowly pour in 2 cups whole milk and ½ cup heavy cream while whisking continuously to blend.
  3. Place saucepan over medium-low heat and stir gently until the mixture is steaming and just about to simmer, about 5 to 7 minutes. Avoid boiling.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in ¼ cup dark chocolate chips until melted and silky. Add 1 teaspoon peppermint extract and a pinch of salt, stirring well to combine.
  5. Pour hot chocolate into heatproof mugs, top generously with whipped cream, and sprinkle crushed candy canes on top. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use low and slow heat to avoid scorching or boiling the milk. Whisk constantly to prevent lumps and skin formation. Adjust peppermint extract to taste as it can be overpowering. For dairy-free, substitute milk and cream with plant-based alternatives. Crushed candy canes add festive crunch but are optional.
