Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend works best for flavor and moisture)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or Italian seasoned)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup diced onion (finely minced for even cooking)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
  • 2 cups beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional, for added depth)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
  • Mashed potatoes or egg noodles for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meatball mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, diced onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Shape the meatballs: Roll the mixture into evenly sized meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. You should get around 16-18 meatballs. Wet your hands slightly if the mixture is sticky.
  3. Cook the meatballs: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of oil. Place the meatballs in the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides. Remove the meatballs and set them aside.
  4. Make the gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until soft and golden brown. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to coat evenly.
  5. Add liquid ingredients: Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring the flour is fully dissolved. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.
  6. Simmer the meatballs: Return the meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and let simmer for 15 minutes, occasionally stirring to ensure even cooking.
  7. Final touches: Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning as needed. If it’s too thick, add a splash of water or broth; too thin, let it simmer uncovered for a few more minutes.
  8. Serve: Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve hot with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or white rice.
